Victor Boniface will go down as one of the most unfortunate players in football history, given his constant battles with injuries.
However, the 25-year-old still has time to make his mark in the sport. If he does, Nigeria will have another useful attacking option at their disposal.
Double-Winning Season Showcased Boniface’s Ability
Boniface bagged 21 goals and 10 assists in 34 games across all competitions as Bayer Leverkusen upset the odds to win the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal in 2023/24.

“After my second ACL injury, I didn’t even want to play anymore because of the pain from the first one and what I had gone through during the second one.”
The emotional burden was made heavier by the personal tragedy of losing his mother around the same time. However, he ultimately refused to walk away.
Boniface’s Undeniable Potential is Enough Reason to Keep the Faith
Before his latest setback, he had started just two of his 11 games for Bremen, averaging around 30 minutes per match and playing a total of 325 minutes across all competitions.
That wasn’t enough time for him to prove his worth, so it is hardly surprising that he failed to open his goalscoring account. But the numbers show that there was enough to keep faith in the striker.
Despite the lack of goals, there were still moments where his quality showed. Boniface registered two assists, created two big chances and averaged 0.6 key passes per match.
Even with limited opportunities, Boniface showed he is comfortable with the ball and capable of making smart decisions in the final third.
He had begun to adapt to Bremen’s system, positioning himself more centrally and looking increasingly like a striker who understands exactly where he needs to be.
These traits made him a hotshot during Leverkusen’s title-winning campaign. If he can pick up where he left off, he could return from this frustrating period with a bang.
Boniface may ultimately need to move to the calmer waters of a less physical league than the Bundesliga, but there is still time for him to forge a successful career in football.
