Trevor Noah Biography
Born on (born 20 February 1984) in Johannesburg, South Africa to a black South African mother and a white European father, Noah began his career as a comedian, television host, and actor in South Africa in 2002.
Noah was born to a Black Xhosa mother and a white Swiss-German father. Noah’s parent’s union was illegal due to the apartheid system and had to conduct their relationship in secret.
While Noah’s parents lived apart, his mother would sometimes visit his father at his apartment complex in a white neighborhood. Frequently, she would be caught doing so, which would result in her being sent away to prison for weeks at a time.
His parent’s union was illegal under apartheid law, which officially governed South Africa between 1948 and 1994. The Mixed Marriages Act of 1949 banned marriage between white people and black people.
As a result of the apartheid system, Noah’s very existence was criminal, which meant that he spent his early years always in some kind of hiding, whether literal or in plain sight.
“My grandmother kept me locked in the house when I was staying with the family in Soweto,” he told NPR in 2016, “If the police did show up … it was a constant game of hide-and-seek.”
Even out in public, his mother, Patricia, would often pretend to be a stranger, or at least someone other than his mother. This was generally the only way for them to walk outside together without the authorities bothering his mother and arresting her for having a biracial child, he told Parade.
Most of Trevor Noah’s early adulthood was spent on the streets of Alexandra, a place he refers to as “the hood” in his memoir. He didn’t have the money for college tuition, so he hustled for all the cash he could get. He DJ’d for some time and sold counterfeit CDs to get money.
Some of his experiences growing up, including the deep poverty his family endured, would become the subject of Noah’s comedic work, which would often look at the racial dynamics of his native country.
Trevor Noah started is career in early 2002 when he was just 18-year-old. He started with a small role on an South African soap opera Isidingo and also started his own radio show Noah’s Ark. He later dropped his radio show to focus on comedy.
