Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, a Ghanaian entrepreneur and former beauty queen, has made history by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon by an individual.

She embarked on this record-setting journey, which she termed “afuaasantewaasingathon,” at the onset of Christmas Eve 2023, and went on to sing continuously for over five days.

Throughout her marathon, she performed in various postures, challenging her physical limits, and concluded the feat at midnight on December 29, 2023, having sung for a total of 126 hours.

This outstanding accomplishment surpasses the previous 105-hour record held by Sunil Waghmare of India. Afua’s unofficial record extended to 126 hours and 52 minutes, outdoing Waghmare by 21 hours.

Unlike Waghmare, who started his musical voyage at a young age and is a professional singer, Afua is driven purely by her passion for music.

Following the marathon, Afua, despite the strain on her voice, expressed her desire for her effort to inspire women to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new challenges.

Her performance drew an array of supporters, including Ghana’s music stars like Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale  Sarkodie. and Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, as she showcased 125 songs from Ghana’s rich musical heritage, spanning genres like gospel, high-life, and hip-life.

The entire event was carefully documented, with DJ support for backing tracks and stringent rules allowing less than 30-second pauses between songs.

Despite the enthusiastic crowd, Afua sang behind clear glass to avoid distractions, with the event being filmed and witnessed for official record verification by Guinness World Records.

Afua’s record-breaking achievement comes amid a surge of record-breaking endeavors in the region, notably with Nigerian chef Hilda Baci’s marathon cooking session which lasted over 90 hours, reflecting a growing enthusiasm for setting new benchmarks in West Africa.
