The Rise of China as a Top Destination for African Students

In recent years, China has emerged as a leading destination for African students seeking higher education opportunities abroad.

The increasing investments by China in Africa have sparked a growing interest among African youth in learning the Chinese language and experiencing the country’s culture.

This trend is reshaping the landscape of international education and positioning China as a formidable competitor to traditional European destinations.

The Growing Trend

Data from The Pie News reveals a significant increase in the number of African students choosing to study in China.

Between 2011 and 2017, there was a staggering 258% growth in the rate of African students traveling to China for education.

Notably, students from lower-middle-income countries, such as Nigeria, constitute a large portion of this international student body.

As of 2019, there were 6,845 Nigerian students enrolled in Chinese institutions, with 512 of them benefiting from Chinese government scholarships.

Additionally, in 2020, 6,659 African students were studying in China, representing 46% of the total international student population in the province.

Future Prospects

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the future looks promising for African students interested in studying in China.

The planned launch of the China-Africa Cooperation on Talent Development is expected to further boost education ties between the two regions.

This initiative will introduce degree courses taught in English and tailor-made programs to help African students learn Chinese language and vocational skills.

China is also set to roll out the China-Africa Universities 100 Cooperation Plan and 10 pilot exchange programs of China-Africa partner institutes.

These initiatives aim to enhance education and innovation collaboration between China and Africa, providing more opportunities for African students to pursue their academic goals in China.

Shifting Preferences

Interestingly, there has been a decline in the number of Nigerian students seeking to study in the UK. Official statistics indicate a 46% decrease in the number of applicants from Nigeria, surpassing the decline from any other country.

This shift in preferences underscores the growing appeal of China as an attractive destination for African students.

In conclusion, China’s rise as a preferred destination for African students highlights the changing dynamics of international education.

With its commitment to education and innovation, China is poised to strengthen its ties with Africa and provide valuable learning experiences for African youth.
