The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has been presenting the African Footballer of the Year award since 1992. The 2023 awards saw Nigerian players Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala winning the prestigious titles.

At the annual CAF Awards held on 11 December in Marrakech, Morocco, Nigerians Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala were honored with the African Footballer of the Year titles for men and women respectively.

Since its inception in 1992, the award has been given annually, except in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The women’s award was introduced in 2001.

Past male awardees include Didier Drogba, Abedi Pele, George Weah, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mané. Both Samuel Eto’o and Yaya Touré have won the award four times, with Touré doing so consecutively from 2011-14.

This year marked Osimhen’s first win, while Oshoala secured her sixth, having previously won in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023, thus extending her record.
